Uganda People’s Defence Forces and Uganda Police Force have arrested 12 people over assaulting a Major implementing curfew rules.
The Joint security task force has arrested 12 people accused of beating a Uganda People’s Defence Forces – UPDF officer at the rank of Major. Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga said Maj Robert Muhasibwe was assaulted on Wednesday night in Kyankwanzi District.
Enanga said the group confronted and assaulted the officer who was enforcing curfew and other directives put in place to control the spread of coronavirus disease. He sustained severe wounds and is currently receiving treatment.
Joint security teams fired bullets in the ensuing scuffle, resulting into the death of one Vicent Lukandura.
Several security officers have been attacked in recent weeks while enforcing guidelines intended to curb the spread of the virus. On April 2, Sgt Paul Candia was attacked in Mityana district with an object which fractured his leg.
Similarly, Private Alex Niwanyine was hit in Amuru district and lost his eye, last month. Niwanyine was enforcing the curfew in Bibia Municipality, from where ne was rushed to Gulu Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, security forces impounded 143 cars on Wednesday night for defying curfew time. Enanga said the police was still screening the drivers and deliberations on how to penalize the errant drivers were ongoing.
Out of 143 impounded motor vehicles, 54 were impounded in Kampala North, 66 were impounded in Kampala South, while 23 were impounded in Kampala East region.
