The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president, Patrick Amuriat Oboi, has been declared the party Presidential flag bearer for the 2021 general election.
The other contender for the seat, Mr Wasswa Biriggwa, who is also the party chairperson, pulled out of the race before elections on Thursday.
Mr Biriggwa said he would instead concentrate on reconciliation within the party and political actors from other parties.
“I am allowing Patrick Amuriat Oboi to carry on this. I have found him strong and he is going to give Mr Museveni a run for his money,” Mr Biriggwa said Thursday at the FDC head offices in Najjanankumbi.
Mr Amuriat was then declared the FDC flag bearer by the party Electoral Commission chairman, Mr BonifaceBamwenda.
“Whereas Ambassador Biriggwa Wasswa endorsed Amuriat as the flag bearer, the commission declares honorable Amuriat Oboi Amuriat as the presidential party flag bearer of FDC party,” he said.
Mr Amuriat announced Biriggwa as the running mate saying he (Biriggwa) is capable of being the deputy president of Uganda.
“And therefore when I become the president next year, he will be my deputy president and this is serious. It’s not a joke,” Amuriat said. Advertisement
“When Ambassador joined FDC, I didn’t believe in him. Even when he contested for the position of chairman, I didn’t trust him because I thought he would lead FDC to Museveni. I even decampaigned him, but I was completely wrong. I have come to know him as an honest and reliable man who is the real leader of the party,” Amuriat added.
Mr Amuriat will now wait to be nominated by the National Electoral Commission before he faces President Museveni who has been in power since 1986 and other contenders.
Other aspirants include Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde, Maureen Kyalya, Charles Rwumushana, Joseph Kabuleta and Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu, among others.
