On January 2, 2024, Pastor Aloysius Bujingo, leader of the House of Prayer Ministries, narrowly survived an attack by unidentified gunmen on his vehicle at Buwalakata road junction in Kampala. The assailants, riding a motorcycle, opened fire, resulting in the tragic death of Bujingo’s bodyguard, Richard Muhumuza. Despite sustaining minor injuries, Bujingo managed to transport Muhumuza to Mulago Hospital, where he was confirmed dead upon arrival.
The police, military, and intelligence agencies have initiated a thorough investigation into the incident. Unfortunately, locals tampered with the crime scene before authorities arrived, leaving them to rely on CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators. The Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, stated that they are actively pursuing justice and reviewing the footage for leads.
Pastor Bujingo is currently undergoing medical treatment and is closely monitored. Eyewitness statements have been recorded to aid the investigation. Muhumuza’s body has been conveyed to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a comprehensive postmortem examination.
In a separate incident on the same day, the home of former Kawempe MP Mubarak Munyagwa was ransacked by unknown individuals. While Munyagwa remains unharmed, his home guard sustained injuries during the attack. The police are actively addressing both cases, signaling a heightened concern for security in Kampala. The incidents highlight the recurring trend of targeted violence against prominent individuals in the city, ranging from politicians to security personnel, business figures, and clerics.
