Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi underscored Iran’s determination to strengthen partnerships with Sri Lanka and other Asian nations during his recent trip to the island nation, despite challenges posed by international sanctions.
Raisi’s visit coincided with the inauguration of the Uma Oya Multipurpose project, a significant venture worth $514 million undertaken by Iranian contractors in Sri Lanka. This project, despite facing obstacles like sanctions and technical complexities, stands as a testament to Iran’s engineering prowess and commitment to collaboration in vital sectors like energy and agriculture.
The Uma Oya project, geared to produce 290 GWh of electricity annually and enhance irrigation capabilities, highlights Iran’s expertise in dam construction, water management, and power generation. Despite funding interruptions in the past, the Sri Lankan government’s perseverance and the continued involvement of Iranian contractors ensured the project’s successful completion.
During his visit, President Raisi expressed Iran’s eagerness to expand ties not only with Asian nations but also with neighboring and independent states. He lauded Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and independent policies, signaling opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.
The trip marked the first visit by an Iranian president to Sri Lanka in 16 years and aimed to bolster partnerships in various sectors. Multiple agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were anticipated to be signed, reflecting both countries’ commitment to deepening cooperation in areas such as the economy, tourism, and science and technology.
