According to the Uganda National Roads Authority (Unra), Lot 2 of the Kampala Flyover project has been delayed due to a dispute over Centenary Park land.
The current occupant of the land, Nalongo Estates, is demanding compensation for their developments on the land before it is demolished to make way for the flyover. Although the lease for Nalongo Estates has expired and the land has been taken over by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Unra is still trying to resolve the compensation issue.
Unra has secured the land from the Electoral Commission, but there are still outstanding issues related to the park. Unra’s legal team and land experts are working to resolve the matter so that they can take over the Centenary Park land. In addition to the compensation issue, Unra must work with relevant agencies to relocate facilities in the park before starting project works on the land.
The Kampala Flyover project, which is being funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), is expected to mitigate traffic congestion problems in Kampala City. On completion, motorists will spend less than 30 minutes on various routes connected to the flyover.
