“We don’t want people like Nsubuga to stay in our area, let him look for a different area; he has been intimidating locals, very aggressive and tells everyone that he was a former soldier. Whenever he drinks, he shouts at night inconveniencing people, for the past two years,” said the source.
Angry residents of Acut Omer Village in Central Division in Kitgum Municipality have evicted Swaibu Nsubuga, a former UPDF, his wife and five children from their home. Nsubuga is accused of among other things theft, intimidation and violence against residents whenever he gets drunk.
The residents raided Nsubuga’s residence on Friday morning, collected all his household property including chicken and dumped it in the compound of Kitgum Resident District Commissioner. One of the residents told URN on condition of anonymity that Nsubuga has on many occasions attempted to kill livestock for wondering in his garden despite being advised to handle the matter with area local leaders.
“We don’t want people like Nsubuga to stay in our area, let him look for a different area; he has been intimidating locals, very aggressive and tells everyone that he was a former soldier. Whenever he drinks, he shouts at night inconveniencing people, for the past two years,” said the source.
However, Nsubuga refuted all the allegations leveled against him in an interview with URN. He says residents ganged against him and threw him out of his home because he is a successful farmer, adding that people purposely leave their livestock to destroy his crops and don’t expect him to react.
Nsubuga says he that planted maize, beans and green vegetable among others during the lock down which are doing well, a thing that none of his neighbors has done.
Nusubga says that when he reported the matter at Kitgum Central Police station, he was accompanied to his home by the officer in charge of operations only to find it stripped bare of all properties. He now, says that he is stranded with his children who haven’t eaten since morning and are homeless.
Geoffrey Toolit, the Central Division LC 3 Chairperson condemned the decision by residents to eject Nsubuga’s family from their home, saying they don’t have the right to do so.
He says as leaders, they are mobilising to support the family with food to enable them feed their children, adding that they will sit down with the Resident District commissioner to handle the matter amicably.
Efforts to get a comment from William Komakech, the Kitgum Resident District Commissioner were futile by the time of filing this story. The evicted family members were still taking refuge in the compound of the RDC.
