Gulu City has officially appointed a new political leader, following the victory of Labeja Julius Acire, also known as Gunya, in the mayoral election. Acire won the race with 12,281 votes, defeating the incumbent Alfred Okwonga, who secured 9,586 votes. The results were announced by the Electoral Commission Returning Officer, Mike Juuko, on Friday morning.
Election Results and Voter Turnout
The mayoral race saw a total of 23,740 valid votes cast, with 664 invalid votes, bringing the total ballot count to 24,404. Other candidates trailed far behind, with Obonyo Mark Anthony earning 1,028 votes, Okello Jonathan receiving 443 votes, Okello Francis Oweka garnering 340 votes, and Obonyo Patrick securing just 67 votes.

After being declared the winner, Labeja thanked the people of Gulu City for their trust and support throughout the campaign. “I am grateful to the people of Gulu City for trusting me with this responsibility,” he said. “I pledge to work with all stakeholders to ensure inclusive development and improved service delivery for the city.”
With the election results now in, expectations are high for the new mayor to foster cooperation and bring about positive change for Gulu City, marking a shift in leadership and a new chapter for the city’s development.
