The residents are likely to be hit by famine since a majority of them rely entirely on farming to earn a living
A total of 45 families in Nambale sub-county Iganga district have been left homeless after their houses were destroyed during a downpour on Monday.
The rain that lasted for over three hours was characterised by strong winds and hailstones also destroyed over 200 acres of banana and cassava plantations.
The entire roof of a three classroom block at Muira Primary School was also blown off during the downpour.
The chairman Muira Primary School’s management committee, James Batanya, urged the government to renovate the school ahead of the official start of the school term.
“We were waiting to start the new term and now a disaster has struck,” he said.
George Taitika the Muira Primary School deputy headteacher said vital documents like textbooks and UNEB registration forms for primary seven candidates were also destroyed.
The affected building also serves as the main administration block for the school.
Peter Musuulo the Muira village LC1 chairman said residents are likely to be hit by famine since a majority of them rely entirely on farming to earn a living.
Musuulo said the damage would have been worse if the downpour had happened at night.
Jane Baliddawa the Muira parish LC3 councillor said the affected families are in urgent need of food, shelter, medicine, and clothing.
The Iganga LC5 chairman Patrick Kayemba said the district disaster committee is to soon travel to the area to assess the extent of the damage caused for necessary action.
