by January 13, 2025

Meta’s recent policy changes have caused a surge in interest in deleting accounts on its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Whether you’re concerned about privacy, misinformation, or data use, here’s a comprehensive guide to downloading your data and deleting your accounts permanently.

1. Deleting Facebook

Download Your Facebook Data

  1. Log in to Facebook on a browser (not a mobile app).
  2. Click your profile picture in the top-right corner and select Settings & Privacy > Settings.
  3. Scroll to Your Information and click Download your information.
  4. You’ll be redirected to the Accounts Center. Click Continue.
  5. Select the Facebook account and the types of data you want to download:
    • Photos, chat history, IP addresses, ads clicked, etc.
    • Choose file format (HTML or JSON), date range, and media quality (low, medium, or high).
  6. Click Submit Request.
  7. Once processed, you’ll receive an email notification to download the file.

  4. Choose Account Ownership and Control > Deactivation or Deletion.
  5. Select Delete Account, confirm, and follow the prompts.
  6. Remember:
    • Facebook delays deletion for a few days.
    • Avoid logging in during this period to prevent cancellation of your request.

2. Deleting Instagram

Download Your Instagram Data

  1. Open Instagram and go to Settings:
    • On the app, tap the three parallel lines (bottom left), then select Your Activity > Download Your Information.
    • Alternatively, access the Accounts Center and find Download Your Information under Your Information and Permissions.
  2. Select the Instagram account and choose Download to Device or Transfer to Destination.
  3. Customize the request:
    • Date range, media quality, and format (HTML or JSON).
  4. Click Create File.
  5. You’ll receive a notification and email once your file is ready. Download it within four days.

Delete Your Instagram Account

  1. Go to Accounts Ownership and Control via the Accounts Center.
  2. Select Deactivation or Deletion > Delete Account.
  3. Confirm the request.
  4. Note: You can reuse the same username for a new account if it’s still available.

3. Deleting Threads

Important Notes

  • Deleting your Threads account will also delete its associated Instagram account.
  • If you want to delete only Threads, follow these steps:

Delete Your Threads Account

  1. Visit Threads.net on a browser.
  2. Go to Settings by clicking the two parallel lines at the bottom left.
  3. Navigate to Account > Deactivate or Delete Profile.
  4. Choose Delete Profile, follow the prompts, and confirm.
  5. Your deletion request takes 30 days to process.
    • To sign up again with the same Instagram profile, wait for 90 days.

Final Tips

  • Back Up Your Data: Always download your information before deleting accounts to retain important memories or files.
  • Stay Informed: Be aware of associated policies—deleting Threads might impact your Instagram account, for example.
  • Act Promptly: Deletion requests often have time-sensitive windows to undo the process.

Deleting your Meta accounts is a straightforward process when you follow the right steps. Whether you’re safeguarding your privacy or taking a stand, you now have the tools to control your digital footprint.
