Iranian President Commends Uganda’s Commitment to Peace and Cooperation

Iranian President Dr. Syed Ebrahim Raisi lauded President Museveni for his efforts in fostering peace, stability, and combatting terrorism and human rights violations in Africa. The Iranian leader acknowledged the longstanding cooperation and strong relations between the two countries since the Islamic revolution.

During their discussions, President Museveni emphasized Uganda’s vast potential, particularly in the agricultural sector. He highlighted the country’s ability to produce various food items such as bananas, maize, coffee, cocoa, and fish. However, President Museveni also acknowledged the challenge of accessing markets and warmly welcomed Iran’s cooperation in addressing this obstacle. He emphasized the potential for expanded trade between the two nations, recognizing Iran’s expertise in areas where Uganda seeks to enhance its capabilities.

President Museveni expressed his gratitude to Iran for inspiring the development of Uganda’s oil resources, particularly referencing the construction of an oil refinery. Despite initial discouragement, the Ugandan President drew inspiration from Iran’s numerous refineries and chose to pursue the project. President Museveni stressed the complementary nature of Uganda’s oil sector and Iran’s expertise, urging ministers to prioritize collaboration in this area.

In response, President Raisi expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome and Iran’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with African nations through economic diplomacy and political cooperation. Iran offered its willingness to share experiences in energy, oil, and technology with Uganda, underscoring the desire to foster mutual growth and development.

President Raisi also commended President Museveni for his unwavering stance against homosexuality, highlighting that it not only contradicts cultural and family values but also the essence of humanity itself. Iran pledged its support to Uganda in the fight against this issue, further solidifying their shared values.

During the visit, Uganda and Iran signed five important memoranda of understanding (MoUs) aimed at bolstering cooperation between the two nations. These MoUs cover various sectors, including agriculture, foreign affairs, and the establishment of a Joint Permanent Commission. The agreements signify the mutual commitment of Uganda and Iran to deepen cooperation and strengthen relations across multiple fields.

The visit of President Raisi to Uganda serves as a testament to the growing ties between the two nations and their shared dedication to promoting peace, stability, and economic growth. The fruitful discussions and signed agreements mark a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship, paving the way for further collaboration and mutual benefits in the future.
