Karimojong Warriors Shoot Dead Prison Warder

John Kayongo was part of the team that had escorted the prisoners to work on a farm near Amita hills when an armed group suspected to be Jie warriors shot him several times, and then took off with his gun. The incident happened at around 11:00 am this morning.

Karimojong warriors have shot dead a prison warder attached to Amita Government Prison in Abim district. The warriors are suspected to be from Kotido district.

John Kayongo was part of the team that escorted the prisoners to work on a farm near Amita Hills, only for the the armed group suspected to be Jie warriors shot him several times, and then took off with his gun.  The incident happened at around 11:00 am this morning.

Kayongo was first rushed to Abim hospital, but doctors referred him to Matany. However, he died of gunshot wounds before reaching Matany hospital at around 1:30 pm.

Enos Odong, the OC CID Abim district says police is investigating the incident. The Prisons Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner Frank Baine explained that the officer was part of the five prison wardens who had escorted the inmates to clear the farm when he was attacked by armed Karimojong warriors who also fled the scene with his gun.

He said security agencies were investigating the people behind the attack.

The Abim Resident District Commissioner, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka says the army and other security agencies are closely following the matter.

He said this is the second incident where thugs have shot dead a person in Abim since 2019. In May last year, a thug killed a bodaboda rider.
