Uganda’s President, Yoweri Museveni, has once again expressed his opposition to homosexuality, referring to it as unnatural and a deviation from what is considered normal.
He also accused the West of imposing its beliefs and values on the rest of the world. Speaking to parliament on Thursday, Museveni indicated that the issue would be discussed more thoroughly and that a medical opinion would be sought on whether homosexuality is caused by nature or nurture.
The president noted that sex in Uganda is typically confidential, and that even heterosexual activity is not usually publicized. This statement comes at a time when the parliamentary affairs committee is reviewing a new Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2023, which aims to prohibit recruitment, promotion, and funding of same-sex practices. Uganda has attempted to pass similar legislation before, with the first Anti Homosexuality Bill being annulled by the Constitutional court in 2014.
Uganda is one of 77 countries globally that criminalize homosexuality, according to the United Nations.
