The president of the National Unity Platform(NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine has said the party has so far raised a Shs117 million from friends in Uganda and abroad to help meet the nomination fees of its candidates.
Last month, the NUP launched a campaign dubbed ‘Muda ku Muda’ to support its candidates’ campaigns, and last week, the party called for donations to help their flag bearers to clear the nomination fees as required by the EC.
NUP officials said the money was meant to support their candidates who might not be able to raise the Shs 3 million, that is demanded by the EC.
Party leaders said this is a lot of money which was meant to lock out members of the opposition from contesting against the NRM.
NUP has a total of 427 candidates across the country who emerged successful after the vetting process.
This means that the money raised so far can meet nomination fees of 39 candidates.
As the fundraising drive continues, Kyagulanyi has appreciated all those who are trying their level best to support their candidates.
“Thanks for all your contributions to this cause. Special thanks to all our diaspora chapters for such a great job. I look forward to interacting with each team in the coming days to be able to say thank you in person. We have also been receiving contributions as low as 1000 shillings from ordinary Ugandans who don’t have much, but they want to be part of the cause. Thank you,” said Kyagulanyi.
He said they will send Shs 25 million to each of their four regional offices to support vulnerable candidates as they raise more funds.
“We believe that with this money, our regional offices will be able to make a small contribution to some candidates who are in dire need, many of whom have raised part of the required money but still have a balance. This is evidence that ours is a people’s struggle. It is a revolution owned by common Ugandans” he said.
