On May 15, 2019, President Yoweri Museveni addressed journalists at the Masindi State Lodge. Responding to a question raised by a journalist on the deforestation of Bugoma Forest, the President assured the journalists that Bugoma would be restored.
Finance minister Matia Kasaija told the President that Bugoma had started disappearing as a large chunk because it was being cleared for sugarcane growing.
In response, the President said forests, both in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, played a great role in ensuring a conducive environment to foster agriculture, which is the back bone of Uganda.
He said whoever was destroying forests or drying up wetlands was an enemy of the country. Forests, he said, work as a system and when one part of the system is tampered with, the entire system is affected. The President said forests and swamps could be restored.
