George Kanyeihamba dies, leaving behind a towering legacy in Uganda’s legal and judicial history. The retired Supreme Court judge and constitutional law expert passed away at age 84. According to his longtime personal assistant Denis, Prof Kanyeihamba died at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, where he had been in intensive care. “Yes, he is no more… he has gone,” Denis said, his voice heavy with emotion.
Born on August 11, 1939, George Kanyeihamba became one of the most influential legal minds in East Africa. His death marks the end of an era in Ugandan jurisprudence. Throughout his decades-long career, he championed constitutionalism, rule of law, and human rights—often at great personal and political cost.
He served as a Supreme Court justice from 1997 to 2009 and held top cabinet positions under President Yoweri Museveni. But over time, he grew critical of Museveni’s increasing grip on power. In a landmark moment, he was one of three justices who ruled that Museveni’s 2006 re-election involved electoral fraud serious enough to warrant annulment.
George Kanyeihamba dies after years of declining health, though he continued to comment on national affairs until recently. Legal scholars, politicians, and former students praised his commitment to legal integrity. His bold opinions often stirred public debate and reinforced judicial independence in Uganda.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among mourned his passing. “Prof Kanyeihamba dedicated his life to serving the nation through cabinet roles, the bench, and legal advocacy. May the good Lord comfort those grieving and grant his soul eternal rest,” she posted on social media.
Beyond his courtroom rulings, Prof Kanyeihamba contributed significantly to legal education. His published works became foundational texts for law students and practitioners across Africa. He often said that a strong constitution was the only guarantee for sustainable peace and justice.
Though out of the public eye in his final years, he remained a revered figure. His words still resonated in legal circles, especially when Uganda faced constitutional changes or political crises.
Now that George Kanyeihamba dies, Uganda reflects on a life that combined deep legal knowledge with moral conviction. His absence will be felt not only in courtrooms but also in classrooms and national discourse. He leaves behind a legal legacy that will inspire future generations.
