THE Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has reappointed Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II as its goodwill ambassador for East and Southern Africa for three years.
The announcement was made by the Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga while addressing the press at Bulange-Mengo on October 1. He said the Kabaka accepted the appointment and advised men to lead the fight against HIV/AIDS.
“UNAIDS appointed the Kabaka in 2017 as the goodwill ambassador for the fight against HIV/AIDS and I’m glad to announce that it has reappointed him up to 2023, the responsibility the Kabaka has accepted to shoulder,” Mayiga said.
He added, “And the Kabaka calls upon all men__ young and adults to spearhead the fight against HIV/AIDS, because in most circumstances it is the men who initiate sexual activities,”.
During the function, Mayiga launched the Kabaka birthday run slated for November 29, with few runners to be flagged-off by the Kabaka at Mengo.
“The run was supposed to be held on April 5, 2020, to mark Kabaka’s birthday which is on April 13 but due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed,” Mayiga explained.
The run will be under the theme “Men lead the fight against HIV/AIDS,” Mayiga.
The Kingdom sports minister, Henry Ssekabembe Kiberu urged all Ugandans to prepare enough for this event, which will be the kasiki for the World Aids Day commemorated annually on December 1.
The Vision Group CEO, Robert Kabushenga is the chairperson of the organising committee and Bukedde newspaper is among the sponsors. Other sponsors are Airtel and dfcu Bank, among others.
