20 Motocyclists Arrested for Trafficking People into Uganda

Paul Kalikwan, the Busia District Deputy Resident Commissioner says that the suspects had opened up more routes that link to Kenya, to beat security forces that were deployed to control the movement of people in the wake of the COVID-19 threat.

Police in Busia has arrested 20 motocylists for allegedly smuggling people through porous routes into Uganda. They were arrested in an operation conducted along the Busia border last night.       

Paul Kalikwan, the Busia District Deputy Resident Commissioner says that the suspects had opened up more routes that link to Kenya, to beat security forces that were deployed to control the movement of people in the wake of the COVID-19 threat.

Kalikwan says that the cyclists were not only defying the president’s directive but were equally promoting human trafficking.

Rogers Ouma, one of the suspects told URN that police rounded him at customs while waiting for a passenger.

Joseph Ojambo, the chairman Busia Motorcycle Boda-boda Riders Association says that they have registered cases of cyclists smuggling people into the country and are working with police to sort it out.

Elepot Eriya, the Busia District Police Commander says that the suspects will be charged for Promoting Human Trafficking.
