Lwamayongo Village, the hometown of Keith Muhakanizi, a long-serving civil servant and economist in Uganda, was filled with mourners yesterday as they gathered to bid him a final farewell. Muhakanizi had passed away on April 13 while receiving medical treatment in Milan, Italy.
The funeral service was attended by his family, friends, and other mourners. Muhakanizi’s casket was draped in national colors and was guarded by the police. Despite heavy rainfall that interrupted the proceedings for three hours, the service continued with prayers led by the clergy.
Numerous speakers spoke highly of Muhakanizi’s contributions to Uganda’s economic development, starting with his career as an economist in the An 11-gun salute sends off Keith Muhakanizi in 1982. He had served in various positions in the ministry until 2021 as The Permanent Secretary/Secretary to the Treasury. Muhakanizi was remembered as a respectful, loving, amiable, and dependable person who valued time management and was committed to serving his country.
Muhakanizi’s family and friends, including his brother Denis Kajwengye and his wife Janet, thanked the government for giving him a befitting send-off. Prominent businessman Ben Kavuya eulogized him as a perfectionist. President Museveni also acknowledged Muhakanizi’s contributions, particularly to Uganda’s economic and financial management reforms.
