Burkina Faso has removed visa fees for all African travellers. The government said the move will make it easier for people and goods to move across the continent. Security Minister Mahamadou Sana announced the decision on Thursday after a cabinet meeting chaired by military leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré. He explained that citizens of any African country can now enter without paying fees. However, visitors will still need to apply online for approval.
The country joins Ghana, Rwanda, and Kenya, which have also eased travel rules for Africans. Citizens of West African states already travelled to Burkina Faso without visas. That arrangement could change in the future because Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger recently pulled out of the Ecowas regional bloc.
Captain Traoré, who came to power in a 2022 coup, often presents himself as a defender of Pan-Africanism. He has criticised Western influence and colonial legacies. His bold style and rhetoric have made him popular across Africa, especially on social media. Supporters see him as a revolutionary leader. Critics accuse him of authoritarian rule, suppressing dissent, and failing to contain Islamist insurgents.
Like its neighbours in the Sahel, Burkina Faso continues to face jihadist violence. An estimated 40% of the country remains outside government control. The junta has turned to Russia for support while promising to restore stability. Yet frequent attacks keep the security situation dire.
Despite these challenges, the visa-free policy highlights the regime’s Pan-African message. In a statement, the government said the move will boost tourism, promote Burkinabe culture, and raise the country’s profile abroad.
Other African nations have taken similar steps. Earlier this year, Ghana allowed all Africans to visit without visas. Kenya introduced a visa-free system in 2023, requiring only online authorisation. Rwanda also permits African nationals to enter freely. The African Union has urged such policies, noting that it is often easier for Europeans or Americans to travel in Africa than for Africans themselves.
The new Burkina Faso visa-free Africa plan is both symbolic and practical. It signals unity with the rest of the continent. It may also encourage more Africans to visit despite the country’s ongoing political and security problems.
