Businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba Disqualified from Uganda Muslim Supreme Council Leadership Amid Election Controversy

Hassan Basajjabalaba, a businessman, has been removed from his position in the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) leadership. He had previously been a member of the General Assembly and had assumed the role in November as the chairperson of Bushenyi Muslim District.

However, the UMSC Electoral Commission disqualified Basajjabalaba, stating that he was illegally elected and that there were widespread election malpractices, including forgeries, committed by him.

The decision to remove Basajjabalaba came after a thorough investigation prompted by a petition from a significant portion of the Bushenyi Muslim District electorate. The UMSC Electoral Commission cited violations of election regulations and guidelines, as well as a constitutional provision that prohibited Basajjabalaba from standing for any post within the UMSC structure.

Basajjabalaba, on the other hand, has challenged the decision, claiming that only the UMSC General Assembly or court has the authority to challenge his election. He attributed his troubles to Mufti Shaban Mubajje, whom he accused of playing politics to deny him the opportunity to serve the Muslim community.

It is worth noting that on May 12, the High Court in Mbarara issued an injunction to halt Basajjabalaba’s dismissal.
