Chaos and Interference Mar NRM Grassroots Elections Start

The NRM grassroots elections began on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, to choose LCI chairperson flag bearers. But in several areas, voting failed to take place. In others, chaos disrupted the exercise.

Dr Tanga Odoi, the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, addressed the media on Wednesday from the party’s Kakyeka offices in Mbarara City. He blamed Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) and Members of Parliament (MPs) for interfering with the process.

“RDCs and MPs in some areas overstepped their roles. RDCs should monitor, not disrupt the process. Some even issued orders that contradicted election rules. I’ll report them to the appointing authority,” Dr Odoi said.

He accused MPs seeking re-election of manipulating the elections. Though he did not mention names, he promised to involve the party’s Central Executive Committee in taking action.

Violations by Party Registrars

Dr Odoi also warned party registrars who failed to follow guidelines. He said they risk immediate dismissal.

“Only registered party members had the right to vote. But in some areas, unregistered individuals cast ballots. That broke the rules,” he said.

He awaits reports from district registrars to identify officials who violated procedures.

High Participation Despite Challenges

Despite disruptions, Dr Odoi said the elections achieved strong results.

“Out of 720,000 polling stations, only 400 didn’t vote. That’s a 98.6% success rate. The remaining areas will complete voting today,” he said.

He emphasized that most of the country voted peacefully and within guidelines.

Calls for Security and Order

Dr Odoi urged security agencies to act against those hired to stir violence. He accused some NRM members and opposition supporters of sponsoring these troublemakers.

He also pointed to voter apathy and poor registration turnout as causes of some confusion.

“Some people claim to support NRM but didn’t register. When we barred them from voting, they resisted and caused trouble. We must respect the rules,” he added.

What’s Next for the NRM?

As the NRM grassroots elections continue, the party is preparing to investigate and discipline those responsible for violations. Dr Odoi’s firm response reflects a push to uphold fairness and credibility in internal processes.

The final phase of voting is underway, and disciplinary reports are expected soon. The outcomes could shape the party’s approach to future primaries and national elections.
