Uganda’s nightlife has its giants. For the past decade, Joseph Kalisa, better known as DJ Spinny, has been one of its brightest. He is quiet, introverted, and laid-back offstage. However, he transforms the moment he steps behind the decks. His electrifying presence is legendary. Furthermore, his energetic crowd engagement and rare ability to MC while mixing have cemented his influence.
A Decade of Growth and Sound Mastery
This year marks 10 years since DJ Spinny began his professional journey. He started with Friends International. This is a significant milestone. Moreover, he celebrates it with a portfolio of Kampala’s most memorable sets. Despite his calm demeanor, his work ethic is fierce. Consequently, his artistry has consistently pushed him to the front line of Uganda’s music scene.
He joins the lineage of legendary Ugandan DJs. These include the late DJ Berry and Alex Ndawula. The list also includes Bangi and the iconic RS Elvis. Today, he shares the stage with names like DJ Lota and Roja. Additionally, he performs alongside rising female talents like Lil Stunner.
Master of the Decks and the Crowd
More than a mixer, Spinny is a full entertainment package. His sets feel like a journey. They feature precise transitions and high-energy drops. He also adds charismatic interaction that keeps crowds in motion. Whether under the neon lights of Kampala or at international venues, his signature style is a powerful blend.
Unlike many DJs, Spinny carefully curates where he plays. One of his main bases is Mezo Nior. This is a high-end club in Kololo, Kampala. Here, he serves as co-director and investor. As a result, Mezo Nior has quickly become a hotspot for premium entertainment.
Celebrating 10 Years: DJ Spinny & Friends at Mestil
Spinny’s decade-long milestone reached its climax in October. He held an exclusive showcase at Mestil Hotel. The event had a premium cover fee. Despite the cost, it sold out completely. This is a rare feat for a DJ-headlined concert in Uganda.

Fresh off this local success, Spinny carried his craft internationally. He performed at FINNS Beach Club in Indonesia. This venue is one of Asia’s top beach clubs. His performance on 24 October 2024 was for a full house. Ultimately, it marked another milestone in his expanding global presence.
Next Up: DJ Puffy Live at Mezo Nior
DJ Spinny’s biggest upcoming project is hosting DJ Puffy. This is the Barbadian Red Bull 3Style World Champion. The event is at Mezo Nior on 19 December. Titled Live at Mezo Nior, it is expected to draw large crowds. Ultimately, it will position Kampala as a destination for world-class nightlife.
