Archbishop Emeritus Paul Bakyenga, who served as the spiritual leader of the Mbarara Archdiocese, has sadly passed away at the age of 79. He breathed his last on Tuesday, July 18, at Rubaga Hospital after battling health complications.
Born on June 30, 1944, in Bumbaire, Igara, Bushenyi district, Bakyenga dedicated his life to the church. He was ordained as a priest on July 11, 1971, and later appointed as a bishop in March 1989. Bakyenga succeeded Bishop John Baptist Kakubi and took on the role of Bishop of Mbarara on November 23, 1991.
Recognizing his dedication and service, Pope John Paul II elevated Bakyenga to the esteemed position of archbishop on January 2, 1999. Throughout his tenure as archbishop, he faithfully led the Mbarara Archdiocese, providing spiritual guidance and support to the Catholic community.
In 2020, Archbishop Paul Bakyenga retired from his position, and Lambert Bainomugisha succeeded him as the Archbishop of Mbarara.
The passing of Archbishop Emeritus Paul Bakyenga is mourned by the Catholic community in Mbarara and beyond. His contributions to the church and his commitment to serving others will be remembered and cherished. May his soul rest in peace.
