A Mauritanian court has sentenced former President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz to five years imprisonment for corruption. The court found him guilty of money laundering and using his position to illegally enrich himself, but acquitted him on other charges. Additionally, the court ordered the seizure of his illegally acquired assets.

Aziz, who ruled Mauritania from 2009 to 2019, had been on trial since January alongside ten other prominent figures, including former prime ministers and ministers. They faced charges of abuse of power, money laundering, illicit enrichment, and influence peddling. While some co-accused received lighter sentences, the former prime ministers and two ex-ministers were acquitted.

Throughout the trial, Aziz maintained his innocence and attributed his prosecution to political motivations. Reports suggest a rift between him and his successor, President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, who was once a close political ally. Aziz is also accused of accumulating vast wealth during his time in office.

Reacting to the verdict, one of Aziz’s lawyers, Mohameden Ould Icheddou, described the trial as “political” and the verdict “very political.” The defense team has announced their intention to appeal the decision.

This landmark ruling marks a significant step in addressing corruption within Mauritania and sends a strong message to future leaders. The trial and its outcome have garnered international attention, highlighting the need for accountability and transparency in government.
