Former Nigerian Senator Convicted in UK Court for Involvement in Illegal Organ Harvesting Conspiracy

by Uganda Times

A Nigerian senator has been found guilty by a UK court in connection with a plot to illegally harvest organs from vulnerable people in Nigeria and sell them on the black market. Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in Nigeria’s upper house of parliament from 2015 to 2019, was convicted of two counts of obtaining money by false pretences.

According to the UK’s National Crime Agency, Sani was involved in a conspiracy to extort money from a businessman, promising to help him resolve a legal case in return for a payment of $24,000. The businessman, however, was then allegedly asked to provide a list of people who could be targeted for organ harvesting.

Sani denied the charges against him, but the court found him guilty after a trial that lasted several months. He is due to be sentenced in the coming weeks.

The case has highlighted the growing problem of organ trafficking in Nigeria, where poverty and a lack of medical infrastructure have made it a hub for the illegal trade. In recent years, there have been numerous reports of people being kidnapped and killed for their organs, which are then sold on the black market to wealthy buyers around the world.

The conviction of Senator Sani is a significant step in the fight against organ trafficking and sends a strong message that those involved in such crimes will be brought to justice. However, much more needs to be done to address the root causes of the problem and to provide better healthcare and economic opportunities for vulnerable people in Nigeria and other countries where organ trafficking is a major concern.
