The Coalition Against Illicit Alcohol Uganda (CAIA-Uganda) has kicked off a nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of illicit alcohol consumption during the festive season. As alcohol consumption surges during the holidays, CAIA-Uganda is urging Ugandans to pause and think before they drink, highlighting the dangers of unregulated spirits that pose serious public health risks.

Illicit Alcohol Consumption Uganda: A Growing Threat

Illicit alcohol, particularly spirits, remains one of Uganda’s most persistent public health threats. According to a 2025 report by Arrow Empirical Research & Skills Enhancement Co. Ltd (AERSE), with supporting data from Euromonitor International, an estimated 65–67% of all alcohol consumed in Uganda is illicit. The study highlights troubling patterns, including early initiation into illicit alcohol use, often before the age of 18, and a high rate of daily consumption among users.

Raising Awareness with Street Activations and Community Outreach

To kick off the campaign, CAIA-Uganda staged high-impact street activations with a giant bottle installation at Garden City and Jinja Road roundabouts in Kampala. This installation serves as a visual reminder of the dangers associated with illicit alcohol consumption, particularly during a time when consumption is at its peak. The campaign also targets boda boda riders, a key demographic, through radio, print media, and community outreach programs.

The Dangers of Illicit Alcohol During Festivities

The festive season presents an ideal opportunity for CAIA-Uganda to educate the public on the risks of consuming unregulated alcohol. Illicit spirits are often packaged in reused containers or small plastic bottles, making it difficult for consumers to distinguish them from legitimate products. These unsafe products are frequently sold without any quality assurance, heightening the risk of alcohol poisoning and other health issues.

Through this campaign, CAIA-Uganda is calling on Ugandans to make safer drinking choices, prioritize health and safety, and be aware of the broader social and economic consequences of illicit alcohol consumption. The campaign encourages those of legal drinking age to avoid illicit alcohol and opt for regulated products that meet safety standards.

Safer Celebrations for a Healthier Uganda

As part of its ongoing efforts, CAIA-Uganda aims to reduce the harm caused by illicit alcohol consumption, protect lives, and foster safer celebrations throughout Uganda. By leveraging public activations and sustained awareness campaigns, the coalition hopes to reduce the consumption of illicit alcohol and safeguard the health of Ugandans during the festive season and beyond.
