John Wick is known for his deadly skills in dispatching enemies using a wide range of weapons, from rifles and pistols to swords and knives, and even a car and a library book. Despite his lethal reputation, Wick has a surprising number of friends in his world, from beat cops to hotel concierges.
This is a departure from the typical portrayal of lone-wolf assassins in cinema, such as Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name or Chow Yun-fat in John Woo films. The screenwriter Michael Finch attributes Wick’s popularity to his inherently good nature and the fact that he is played by Keanu Reeves, who is difficult to dislike.
Wick’s circle of friends has only grown over the course of the franchise’s three films, and continues to expand with the latest installment, “John Wick: Chapter 4,” which features even more top talent in its supporting cast, including Hiroyuki Sanada and Donnie Yen.
The franchise’s simple setup involves Wick coming out of retirement to seek revenge against a man who killed his dog and stole his car. As the story progresses, Wick meets a variety of friends, acquaintances, and associates, all of whom are drawn to his inherently good nature.
