King Charles III of Britain is on a rescheduled three-day state visit to France, aiming to strengthen the cross-Channel alliance despite post-Brexit political tensions. Initially planned for March, this visit is the monarch’s first state visit abroad since ascending the throne.
Upon arrival in Paris, King Charles and Queen Camilla were welcomed by French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte at the Arc de Triomphe. They laid wreaths to honor the war dead of both countries before embarking on a procession along the Champs-Elysees to the Elysee Palace for talks with President Macron.
The royal couple will also attend a state banquet at Versailles, featuring a menu of delicacies and attended by prominent guests, including Charlotte Gainsbourg, Hugh Grant, and Arsene Wenger.
While this visit carries diplomatic significance, it’s also a chance for King Charles to expand his international presence and promote issues such as the environment, sustainability, and young entrepreneurship.
However, there is a balancing act for President Macron, who must ensure the visit appears appropriate during a period of economic frugality and avoid accusations of acting too much like a monarch himself.
King Charles III’s visit follows UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s efforts to reset UK-France relations after Brexit-induced tensions. The quick reinstatement of this visit underscores the importance both nations place on it.
The late Queen Elizabeth II, a francophile who made five state visits to France during her reign, provides a poignant backdrop to this visit. King Charles is expected to follow in her footsteps during various engagements, emphasizing continuity in the cross-Channel relationship.
