70-year-old Petwa Mukyala trekked a journey of 18 kilometers from Sakabusolo village in Mafubira Sub County to the RDC’s office in Jinja town on Friday afternoon. Mukyala told reporters that she has seven orphaned grandchildren under her care who she supports using the rental fees for her eight rooms.
She however, says the tenants have failed to pay up for March, which has forced her to exhaust her savings to care for her grandchildren. Mukyala told URN that her tenants claim that the president suspended the payment of rent until the Covid19 pandemic is dealt with.
In his latest nationwide address on the Covid19 pandemic mid this week, President, Yoweri Museveni warned landlords against harassing their tenants over rent during the lock down. He asked them to bear with the tenants because of the lock down and allow them to pay later.
Mukyala says her family has gone for three days without food, which prompted her to seek help from the authorities other than watch the young ones perish because of hunger.
Mukyala received 5 kilograms of maize flour and 3Kgs of beans after patiently waiting for the RDC for three hours. The Jinja Resident District Commissioner, Erick Sakwa, said several landlords have been flocking his office demanding for his intervention following the presidential directive.
“Some landlords are worried on whether their tenants will manage to clear their accumulated rental dues after this storm but I have advised them to keep calm,” he said.
