Police Probe Theories in Lawyer Kyalo Mbobu’s Killing

by September 12, 2025

Police have identified two possible motives behind the lawyer Kyalo Mbobu killing in Nairobi. They suspect the murder stemmed either from a business deal gone sour or from his legal practice. Detectives ruled out robbery, saying the gunmen planned the attack and carried out surveillance before striking.

Mr Mbobu died on Tuesday evening after two assailants on a motorbike sprayed his car with bullets along Magadi Road in Karen. They shot him eight times as he drove home. Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor confirmed that the lawyer suffered fatal spine and neck injuries. He explained that excessive bleeding caused his death, with two bullets lodged in his chest.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga ordered detectives to complete investigations within seven days. He also appealed to the public to share information that might help identify the killers.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) formed three special teams to lead the probe. Officers from Lang’ata DCI, the Homicide Bureau, the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, and the elite Operations Support Unit are working together. Nairobi DCI boss Benson Kasyoki has chaired several meetings to review progress. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that detectives had already identified persons of interest. Without revealing names, he assured the family that suspects would face justice soon.

Mr Murkomen described the lawyer as both his teacher and friend. He said the killing shocked the country and demanded quick answers. He also urged Kenyans with knowledge of the attack to speak out, noting that several witnesses had already come forward.

The family confirmed that Mr Mbobu will be buried on September 17 at his Mua Hills home. Spokesperson James Maluki Mbobu said they made the decision to ease the trauma of travel and repeated visits. He explained that the family remains devastated and desperate to know who ordered the killing and why. He described his brother as soft-spoken, peace-loving, and committed to justice during his 37 years of legal service.

Mr Mbobu recently represented Benjoh Amalgamated Limited in a dispute with Kenya Commercial Bank over the contested sale of Muiri Coffee Estate in Kiambu County. The estate, owned by Captain (rtd) Kung’u Muigai, a relative of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, remains under litigation. His work on such high-stakes cases has raised speculation that his legal duties may have placed him in danger.

For Kenya’s legal fraternity, the lawyer Kyalo Mbobu killing is both a personal tragedy and a test of justice. As detectives pursue new leads, the public and his family wait anxiously, determined that those behind the attack will be exposed and punished.
