Manhunt underway for Ugandan Ex MP and vigilante group accused of vicious assault and robbery

On April 30, 2023, at approximately 3:30 PM, Hon. Odonga Otto and a group of vigilantes were caught on video viciously beating three individuals who were buying charcoal in Laorogali village, Atanga sub-county, Pader district.

The victims, Ssemanda Charles, Wagwana Yusuf, and Takafa Erisata, were assaulted with sticks and pangas, and one of them, Ssemanda Charles, was robbed of 1,097,700/= (One million ninety-seven thousand, seven hundred shillings) in cash.

The attackers also vandalized the Fuso truck the victims had used to transport the charcoal and stole several items from it. The victims were later released and reported the incident to Atanga police station. The police are currently conducting a manhunt for Hon. Odonga Otto and all those who participated in the assault.

This is not the first incident involving Hon. Odonga Otto and his group. They had previously attacked Olara Charles Okello while he was buying firewood in his motor vehicle along Lapul-Atanga road in Atanga sub-county. The attackers robbed the victims of their phones and other belongings, and the incident was reported to Pajule police station.

Although Hon. Odonga Otto and his group claim to be an advocacy group enforcing a ban on commercial trade in Acholi Sub-region, their violent actions pose a serious threat to society and can lead to hate crimes. The Territorial Police in Aswa Region and Pader district are actively searching for the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.
