Mayanja asks Nabbanja to intervene in Nakawa-Naguru land wrangles

The State Minister for Lands, Dr Sam Mayanja, has written to Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, calling for her intervention in the ongoing scramble for the Nakawa-Naguru land.

“I was today compelled to urgently intervene in the Nakawa-Naguru wrangles which were becoming violent. I managed to cool down the tempers and stakeholders agreed to stop all activities on Nakawa-Naguru land for three months effective today to allow government come up with a win-win solution for all,” Mayanja told the Prime Minister in his letter dated February 23, 2022.

In the letter, Mayanja asked the Prime Minister to call for a meeting involving the Minister for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Uganda Land Commission and the Attorney General to set the agenda for the further management of the Nakawa-Naguru land wrangles.

In an earlier letter to the chairperson of the Uganda Land Commission dated February 22, 2022, Mayanja indicated he had received a petition from Karim Somani, the managing director of Multi Consult Designs Limited in which he alleged that the Uganda Land Commission violated the consent agreement entered between the Attorney General and Opec Prime Properties (U) Limited to have 3.3 acres for plots 1-10 on Eureka close.

According to the agreement, the 3.3 acres were to be titled in the names of Opec Prime Properties (U) Ltd and their partner Multi Consult Designs.

The petitioner told the minister that contrary to the consent agreement, Uganda Land Commission instead allocated land to other parties who had embarked on vandalising the property already put up by Multi Consult Designs Limited.

Last year government repossessed the Nakawa-Naguru land 10 years after allocating it to Opec Prime Properties (U) Ltd to build on it a satellite city. The repossession followed the failure of the company to construct the satellite city as it had promised.

Many legislators were last year opposed to the move by the government to allocate the land to private individuals and companies and advised the government to use the land to construct offices for various government entities which are in rented premises.
