Court Decision Looms on Mercy Kanyesigye’s Victory Amid Election Dispute

Mercy Kanyesigye's victory

In a tense political moment, youth leaders from across Uganda are rallying behind Mercy Kanyesigye, urging the court to uphold her victory as the National Female Youth Member of Parliament-elect. The appeal comes after Kanyesigye’s victory on February 6, 2026, was challenged by her opponent, Diana Ampaire, who is seeking a vote recount.

Mercy Kanyesigye’s Victory Faces Court Challenge

Mercy Kanyesigye was declared the winner of the February 6 election, having secured 216 votes at Hoima City Stadium, defeating Diana Ampaire by a margin of 18 votes. However, Ampaire has since filed an application for a recount, which is scheduled for a ruling by the court on Tuesday. Youth leaders have been vocal in rejecting the recount, arguing that the election process was free and transparent, and Kanyesigye’s victory should not be contested.

Youth Leaders Demand the Upholding of the Election Result

At a media briefing in Kampala on Sunday, youth leaders under the National Youth Council (NYC) expressed their support for Kanyesigye, dismissing the recount request as unfounded. “The election was fair, and the Electoral Commission, led by Justice Simon Byabakama, oversaw the process,” said Stephane Ndyamuhaki, NYC Secretary for Finance. “We reject this attempt to challenge Kanyesigye’s victory.”

The youth leaders further rejected claims suggesting that the Presidency may favor Ampaire over Kanyesigye, urging the President’s office to clarify the matter publicly.

Concerns Over Recount and Electoral Integrity

Several youth leaders expressed concerns about the integrity of the ballot box at this stage, with some questioning the validity of a recount from a single polling station after so much time has passed. “The election was conducted in broad daylight, and Kanyesigye’s victory is clear,” said Sarah Kyomuhangi, a youth leader from Kampala. “Our votes were protected, and no one raised concerns during the election process.”

Other leaders, such as Franco Waiswa from Iganga, emphasized the finality of the youth’s decision: “We have made our choice, and Kanyesigye is our MP-elect,” he said.

Court Ruling to Determine Outcome

With the court set to rule on the recount application, youth leaders are keenly awaiting a decision that they hope will preserve the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that the chosen representative remains in place. “Mercy Kanyesigye is the choice of the youth, and we want her as our MP,” said John Kisembo from Kakumiro District.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the final ruling will be pivotal in upholding the democratic process and the voices of Uganda’s youth in the national parliament.
