by Uganda Times

Kawempe North MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya, flown to Germany for specialized medical treatment, with funding from the Parliament of Uganda. This decision comes after recent tests indicated that he is suffering from lung tumors, which cannot be adequately addressed within Uganda.

Prior to his departure, our reporter spoke with him, and he revealed the severe impact his condition has had on his health. Holding a large envelope branded with Ecurei, Mengo hospital, Ssegirinya disclosed the presence of wounds on his lungs, making breathing difficult and causing significant stomach pain. Additionally, he mentioned experiencing high temperatures and hypertension during the night.

Accompanied by his brother, who will be paid by parliament to serve as his caretaker, Ssegirinya expressed hope for a successful treatment, allowing him to return to his responsibilities as the MP for Kawempe North.

Parliament has committed to covering all expenses during Ssegirinya’s medical leave, including air tickets and hospital bills in Germany. Notably, Ssegirinya becomes the third opposition NUP lawmaker to receive medical treatment abroad, following in the footsteps of MPs Betty Nambooze Bakireke and Shamim Malende, both on extended medical leaves.

The International Crimes Division court has released Ssegirinya’s diplomatic passport to facilitate his travel for treatment. Previously, he and his co-accused, Allan Ssewanyana of Makindye West, had their passports deposited at the court as part of their bail terms before being discharged from prison in February of this year.
