Mubuku Pupil Drowns in River After Heavy Rains in Kasese

by May 21, 2025

The Mubuku pupil drowns in river tragedy has deeply saddened the Mubuku Primary School and the Kasese District community. On Tuesday evening, 8-year-old Innocent Magambo drowned in River Mubuku after heavy rains swelled the riverbanks.

Magambo had been playing with friends near the river at around 7 p.m. None of the children noticed how fast the water was rising. Suddenly, a powerful current pulled him into the river and swept him nearly 200 metres downstream.

Earlier in the day, heavy rains fell across the Rwenzori Mountains, triggering rapid flooding in River Mubuku. Like many rivers in the region, its water levels rose within minutes due to runoff from the highlands.

Local residents and community leaders quickly responded to the calls for help. They worked together and recovered Magambo’s body near the Mubuku Prisons maize farm, a short distance from the school.

The tragedy stunned both the school and the community. Teachers and classmates described Innocent as an enthusiastic, cheerful learner who stood out for his kindness and energy.

“We are devastated,” said a teacher at Mubuku Primary School. “This shows how unpredictable and dangerous these rivers can become during the rainy season.”

In response to the incident, school officials and local leaders urged parents and guardians to monitor children more closely. They emphasized the dangers of rivers like Mubuku and Nyamwamba, which can transform from calm streams into deadly torrents in a matter of minutes.

Kasese has experienced similar losses in previous years, especially during seasonal downpours in the Rwenzori region. The network of rivers and streams that originate in the mountains often overflow suddenly, threatening nearby communities.

The Mubuku pupil drowns in river case has renewed calls for stronger public awareness about flood safety. Community members have requested early warning systems, safety education for children, and better supervision around riverbanks.

As the Magambo family grieves the loss of their young son, the community stands by them in solidarity. Many hope that this painful lesson will raise awareness and help prevent future tragedies.
