On Monday, Nigerian aviation employees staged a two-day strike to protest their working conditions and wages, blocking roads to the domestic terminal of Lagos airport, causing traffic congestion and delays for passengers.
The strike may exacerbate issues faced by Africa’s largest oil producer, where jet fuel shortages are common, leading to grounded local flights and difficulties for international carriers repatriating revenue due to a shortage of foreign currency.
Workers from various unions representing pilots, engineers, control tower operators, and other airport staff are protesting unpaid wages, the government’s failure to implement a minimum wage for the industry, and plans to demolish the Lagos offices of some aviation agencies to expand the airport.
The striking workers have threatened an indefinite strike later this month if their grievances remain unaddressed. In Abuja, workers blocked the main toll road to the airport, and in Kano state, workers picketed at the airport, but flights were still operating.
Lagos and Abuja airport management advised travelers to allow additional time to reach the airport due to the strike. The Nigerian aviation ministry did not comment on the strike.
