Police Releases List of Victims in Kasese School Attack

KASESE – The police have officially identified the victims of the tragic attack at Lhubirira Secondary School in Mpondwe, Kasese district. Contrary to earlier claims of a death toll of 50, the police spokesperson, Mr. Fred Enanga, clarified that the number of fatalities remains at 42.

During a press conference at the police headquarters in Naguru, Mr. Enanga disclosed that the police forensic teams examined 17 bodies recovered from the mortuary in Fort Portal. All 17 victims were male, and some of them had gunshot wounds in addition to burns. The forensic team has collected DNA samples from the bodies and from their relatives for comparison.

In a statement, Mr. Enanga emphasized the resilience of the country in the face of terrorism and extremism, stating, “No matter how heinous the attack or how brutal or inhumane the methods used, they will not be able to succeed in demolishing our solidarity in the fight against terrorism and extremism.”

The nation continues to mourn the loss of 42 individuals, including 37 children, who tragically lost their lives in the recent terrorist attack at Lhubirira Secondary School. The deceased have been identified as follows:

  1. Muhindi Wapalya – 25-year-old male peasant
  2. Kiiza Khabugho Rosette – 15-year-old female student
  3. Kamalha Rusia – 15-year-old female S.2 student
  4. Kule Martin – 22-year-old male S.3 student
  5. Masereka Eliton – 17-year-old male S.3 student
  6. Masika Rosette – 17-year-old female student
  7. Katusime Ruth – 20-year-old female student
  8. Nzabake Mackline – 18-year-old female S.2 student
  9. Mbusa Kirilhuhandi – 47-year-old school watchman
  10. Nyakato Eliza – 19-year-old female S.2 student
  11. Biira Ronet – 17-year-old female S.3 student
  12. Biira Gauba – 20-year-old female student
  13. Mbambu Junior – 20-year-old female
  14. Kabugho Jovibine – 16-year-old female S.1 student
  15. Biira Melvine – 14-year-old female S.1 student
  16. Ithungu Marion – 22-year-old female student
  17. Ithungu Joy – 17-year-old female S.3 student
  18. Biira Amina Rashid – 17-year-old female juvenile
  19. Masereka Zakayo – 70-year-old male peasant
  20. Masika Florence – 95-year-old female peasant
  21. Ithungu Regina – 16-year-old female student
  22. Kabugo Masiline – 18-year-old female S.1 student
  23. Ithungu Mackline – 12-year-old female S.1 student
  24. Khabugho Janet – 16-year-old female S.1 student
  25. Khabugho Bridget Deya – 16-year-old female student

To date, 23 bodies have been released to the families for burial, while two remain unclaimed. The police provided an update on the survivors who are currently receiving medical treatment:

  1. Aliganyira Wilfred – 21-year-old with severe burns, transferred to Kiruddu Hospital for better management
  2. Tumwebaze Godwin – 32-year-old with a head injury, transferred to Mulago Hospital for better management
  3. Mbambu Felistus – 50-year-old female in critical condition at Bwera Hospital
  4. Kule Erias – 18-year-old with a cut wound on the left side of the head, still admitted at Bwera Hospital
  5. Mumbere Godwin – 16-year-old with a gunshot wound on the left side of the head, still admitted at Bwera Hospital
  6. Isingoma Julius – 21-year-old with soft tissue injuries, still admitted at Bwera Hospital

Four survivors have successfully recovered from the incident. They are identified as Mumbere Edgar, Kato Moses, Muhindo Steven, and Kambesa Gideon.

As the nation mourns the devastating loss of innocent lives, efforts are underway to provide medical care and support to the survivors. The incident has reinforced the country’s determination to stand united against terrorism and extremism.
