Pope Francis will be discharged from the Gemelli hospital on Saturday after spending three nights there for treatment of bronchitis. The 86-year-old pontiff’s condition improved after he was given antibiotics.

During his hospital stay, the pope visited the children’s cancer ward and even baptized a baby boy. He was expected to preside over Palm Sunday mass in St Peter’s Square, which marks the beginning of Holy Week.

This hospitalisation was his second since 2021 when he underwent colon surgery at the same hospital. His health issues over the past year have sparked concern, including speculation that he might choose to retire.

Visitors to St Peter’s Square expressed relief over his improvement. The Gemelli hospital is the favored choice of pontiffs and was even dubbed “Vatican 3” by pope John Paul II.
