The trucks which were today flagged off by the Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, started the distribution from Bwaise, in the outskirts of Kampala. Rugunda said that the distribution teams will move from door-to-door to avoid crowds that could facilitate the spread of the Coronavirus.
The distribution exercise is being handled by security under Gen. Elly Tumwine working with local Council One Chairpersons.
Rugunda says that Kampala and Wakiso had needy people who are less likely to find food during the ongoing lockdown. A number of people in Kampala and Wakiso earn from hand to mouth and cannot work since the government declared a partial lockdown in a bid to fight COVID 19, said Rugunda.
He also says that the government will distribute food to all hospitals in the Country, Orphanages and barracks.
The Minister for Relief and Disaster Preparedness Musa Ecweru says that after distribution in Bwaise, they will also distribute to some orphanages in Kampala and Wakiso districts that are in dire need of food. He could not at the time tell the total amount of food to be distributed to different parts of Kampala and Wakiso.
Meanwhile the Prime Minister also received a donation of 100 million Shillings from Ham Kiggundu of Ham Enterprises, and walkie-talkies worth 500 million Shillings from Samanda Solutions, the country Representative of Motorola.
