Police arrested a Rukungiri policeman after he lost his service gun during supper, sparking concern and a region-wide search. The incident involved PC Pius Muyambi, who left an SMG rifle with 30 rounds of ammunition in his bedroom near the station counter at Rwakaraba Police Post.
According to Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate, the officer went for supper around 8:30 pm on July 26, 2025, leaving the weapon unattended. When he returned, the gun was missing.
Mr. Maate urged the public to stay alert and report any sightings of the weapon. “We encourage everyone to contact local leaders or security officers if they see the gun or suspect someone has it,” he said.
Investigators arrested PC Muyambi to aid the probe. Authorities view his actions as a severe breach of duty, given the region’s recent spike in violent crimes.
Nearby Kisoro District has reported a series of armed robberies. On April 29, robbers shot a shop attendant and escaped with Shs23 million. Police later arrested five suspects: Ndishimiye Brandon, Munezero Bashir, Irankunda Desire, Irankunda Garlad, and Mfitundinda Slivan.
In another incident, police captured Irankunda Gerald and Habyarimana Vallence, two Rwandese nationals, for involvement in multiple armed robberies. Officers recovered an AK-47, a magazine, one live round, and police uniforms.
Gerald confessed to the crimes and admitted to escaping custody earlier from Ruti Police Station in Mbarara during an interrogation.
Kisoro District Police Commander Ben Niwamanya Kashumbusha called on residents to help authorities. “Work with us to ensure these investigations succeed. Community safety depends on active cooperation,” he said.
The police continue searching for the missing rifle, stressing that public vigilance is essential. The Rukungiri policeman arrested may face disciplinary action, and further charges may follow depending on the outcome of the investigation.
