Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has announced the disbursement of approximately Shs93 billion to districts, cities, and municipalities nationwide. This allocation represents the final installment from the Uganda Road Fund for the current fiscal year.
Under this allocation, each of the 135 districts, 11 cities, and 41 municipalities is set to receive Shs500 million.
Speaker Among has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to oversee the utilization of these funds. During the start of plenary on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, she emphasized the importance of MPs monitoring the expenditure in their respective constituencies.
The Government Chief Whip, Hon. Denis Hamson Obua, confirmed the disbursement, noting that it addresses concerns primarily related to feeder roads’ conditions.
MP Francis Mwijukye (FDC, Buhweju County) cautioned against diverting the funds towards maintaining district road equipment, as it could reduce the amount available for essential road improvement projects.
Additionally, Speaker Among criticized a news report that made unsubstantiated claims against Parliament and MPs, especially regarding the ongoing rationalization process.
She emphasized that MPs work for their constituents’ welfare and questioned the motives behind such allegations. She stressed the need for fair and professional reporting by the media when covering parliamentary activities.
