The Minister of Internal Affairs, Rtd. Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, has expressed his strong condemnation of the actions of police officers who manhandled female opposition lawmakers during a peaceful protest to his office. The lawmakers were planning to deliver a petition about terror by RDCs and DPCs.
Otafiire shared his disgust and sympathy for the lawmakers, who were arrested at the gate of Parliament. He stated that he will meet with the Inspector General of Police to determine if the officers were in the right state of mind.
The Uganda Human Rights Commission Chairperson, Ms. Mariam Wangadya, also wrote a letter on April 27th, highlighting rights abuses as the reason for seeking an audience with the IGP Okoth Ochola.
The Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa denounced the brutality in Parliament, calling the implicated officers saboteurs who aim to taint the image of the government. Tayebwa demanded that the officers get apprehended for their disregard for freedom of association, which is enshrined in article 29 of the Ugandan constitution.
He also pointed out that it was disturbing that NRM lawmakers were allowed to preside over belated women’s day celebrations while their opposition counterparts were brutalized by the police.
