Tragedy Strikes as Fuso Truck Plunges Into Lake Victoria, Claiming Three Lives

In a sad incident, three individuals lost their lives in Namayingo District, eastern Uganda, after a Fuso truck they were traveling in veered off course and plunged into Lake Victoria. The tragic event unfolded at Buumeru landing site in Mutumba Sub-county, attributed to a failure in the truck’s braking system while it was speeding.

According to reports from the police, the crash resulted in the immediate deaths of two passengers, with a third individual succumbing to injuries while being transported to a health center. Ms. Diana Nandawula, the Busoga East police spokesperson, provided details on the incident, highlighting the swift response and retrieval of the bodies from the water. The deceased were then transferred to Buyinja Health Centre IV in Namayingo District for postmortem examinations as part of ongoing investigations into the accident.

The wreckage of the Fuso truck, bearing registration number UAY 233S, exhibited signs of impact as it initially collided with a fish shed at the landing site before careening into the lake. Subsequently, the damaged vehicle was towed to Namayingo Central Police Station for thorough inspection and analysis.

Betty Angatai, the district information officer, expressed sorrow over the tragic event, noting that besides the fatalities, several others sustained injuries in the crash. Authorities are actively working to identify the victims and ascertain whether the injured individuals are residents of the area, underscoring the community’s shock and grief following the accident.

As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue, the local community mourns the loss of lives and grapples with the aftermath of this tragic accident on the shores of Lake Victoria.
