Trigger Happy Soldier’s Body Handed Over to Family After 21-Day Wait

Mother of Late Pte Sabiiti Wilson

Kabarole District, Uganda – After a lengthy 21-day wait, the body of Private Wilson Sabiiti, the soldier responsible for the tragic killing of former State Minister for Labour, Col (Rtd) Charles Okello Engola, has finally been handed over to his family by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). The UPDF, initially reluctant to participate, has reversed its decision and is now fully involved in the burial arrangements.

The somber event took place at the ancestral home of Pte Wilson Sabiiti in Mubali Village, Kijura Town Council. Soldiers from the UPDF were present to ensure a dignified farewell for their fallen comrade. The body arrived at 5:00 am on Tuesday, marking the end of a prolonged period of uncertainty and grieving for Sabiiti’s family.

Sabiiti’s tragic actions unfolded on May 2 when he fatally shot Minister Charles Engola before taking his own life. The incident shocked the nation and raised questions about the mental well-being of soldiers and their access to appropriate support systems.

The UPDF’s initial decision not to participate in the burial proceedings sparked controversy and public outcry. However, the military has now fully embraced its responsibility and is actively engaged in organizing the final rites for Pte Wilson Sabiiti. The presence of soldiers at the burial aims to provide a sense of closure and honor for both the deceased soldier and the victims of his violent act.

The local community in Kabarole District is coming together to support Sabiiti’s family during this challenging time. The burial arrangements are underway, ensuring that the fallen soldier receives a proper send-off in accordance with local customs and traditions.
