Mityana, UgandaAugust 3, 2025 | A tragic accident occurred on the Mubende–Kampala highway on Sunday morning when a school bus carrying pupils and staff from Day Star Primary School, Kampala, overturned near Kagavu, Mityana District.

The incident, which took place at 5:30 AM in Zigoti, resulted in the deaths of two pupils, while 11 others sustained various injuries. The bus, registered UAP 829U and operated by HMK Transporters Ltd, was returning from a school tour in Kasese when it lost control.

Driver’s Fatigue to Blame

According to ASP Michael Kananura, spokesperson for Uganda Police’s Traffic Directorate, initial investigations suggest the driver fell asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to overturn. Two pupils died on the spot, and 11 others, including four tour guides and the school’s head teacher, were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The names of the deceased were not disclosed immediately, as their families were still being notified. The bus was traveling back to Kampala from a school trip when the fatal crash occurred.

Authorities Respond

The Uganda Police Force has issued a stern reminder regarding road safety, especially when transporting children for school trips. ASP Kananura emphasized that this incident highlights the risk of fatigue among long-distance drivers and urged school administrators to ensure safe travel conditions for pupils.

The safety and well-being of pupils must be taken seriously, especially during school trips,” said Kananura, calling for greater vigilance and care during travel.

School Authorities React

The school expressed deep sorrow over the loss of young lives and extended condolences to the families of the victims. The authorities have pledged to cooperate fully with Uganda Police in the ongoing investigation.

Wider Concerns About Road Safety

This tragic incident is part of a growing concern about road safety in Uganda. According to the 2023 Annual Crime Report by Uganda Police, there were over 20,300 road crashes in the previous year, leading to more than 4,800 fatalities, many involving pedestrians and children. Fatigue, reckless driving, and mechanical failure are often cited as major contributing factors.

Authorities are expected to call for further safety measures, including a review of school travel protocols and better regulation of bus services to prevent further incidents like this.
