KAMPALA – Two Ugandans Law Firms; KRK Advocates & Atuhairwe & Company Advocates Under Scrutiny for Alleged LGBTQ+ Support
Ugandan authorities have intensified their crackdown on LGBTQ+ activities, with KRK Advocates and Atuhairwe & Company Advocates at the center of a recent high-profile operation. The law firm is accused of providing legal assistance to individuals engaged in same-sex relationships, an act criminalized under Ugandan law.
On January 10, 2025, law enforcement officials arrested several individuals linked to the firm, including Stephen Ojok, Kangave John, Byamugisha Abdul, Mulwanyi Johnson Peter, and Joseph Amanyire. The suspects were taken into custody and later remanded to Luzira Prison as investigations continue.
Authorities claim that KRK Advocates & Atuhairwe & Company Advocates have been actively supporting LGBTQ+ individuals, a move they describe as an attempt to undermine the country’s cultural and moral values. Government officials have reiterated their commitment to enforcing anti-homosexuality laws and warned that any entity found promoting such activities will face severe consequences.
However, human rights organizations have raised concerns over what they view as an increasing crackdown on personal freedoms. Activists argue that targeting legal professionals for providing counsel to marginalized groups threatens the principles of justice and due process.
As the case moves through the legal system, both national and international observers are closely monitoring how the Ugandan judiciary will handle the allegations against KRK Advocates & Atuhairwe & Company Advocates and its affiliates.
