Cedric Babu, a celebrated Ugandan tennis star and rising political figure, rested in Kamengo, Mpigi District. National leaders, family, and longtime friends—including Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba—gathered to pay heartfelt tributes. On June 5, 2025, they honored a life marked by loyalty, excellence, and patriotic service.
Cedric Babu died on May 31, 2025, in Nairobi after suffering heart complications. Weeks earlier, he collapsed in Kigali, Rwanda. His sudden passing shocked Uganda, leaving the nation mourning a man whose influence spanned sports, business, and politics.
Starting as a national tennis champion, Cedric Babu demonstrated passion, ambition, and deep commitment to Uganda. He began his journey in exile during the 1980s and forged lifelong friendships. One of these was with Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who delivered an emotional eulogy at the burial.
“Cedric was more than a friend,” Muhoozi said. “He was a loyal brother you could always count on.” They met as children in Nairobi and reconnected in Uganda during school. Their bond lasted over four decades.

As a sportsman, Cedric Babu stood out in his era. He represented Uganda in the Davis Cup and became a national sensation. After retiring, he devoted himself to developing tennis in Uganda, mentoring youth and improving sports infrastructure.
Driven by a desire to bring change, Babu entered politics. In 2021, he ran for a parliamentary seat and planned to contest again in 2026. Shortly before his death, he visited Muhoozi’s home in Entebbe and shared his political ambitions. “We talked about life, family, and his future plans,” Muhoozi recalled. “That was our last conversation.”
Cedric Babu was the son of Capt Francis Babu, former minister and Kampala Central MP, and Olive Zaitun Kigongo, head of the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Although born into prominence, Cedric stayed humble and focused on service.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa also paid tribute, calling Cedric “an inspirational figure whose legacy deserves emulation.” Moreover, he read a condolence message from President Yoweri Museveni, who described Babu as “a sports gem” and “a budding political leader with deep love for his country.”
Although his political career was just starting, Cedric Babu showed strong leadership and genuine commitment to public service. He actively engaged in business and community projects, always striving to uplift others.
“Though we mourn, we are grateful for the 50 years we shared with him,” Muhoozi said. “He lived fully, marked by loyalty, love, and dedication to Uganda.”
In his final days, Cedric Babu held onto hope and plans for the future. Those who knew him remember a man of integrity, compassion, and strength. Gen Muhoozi and others have pledged to support his family and ensure his values live on.
Cedric Babu may be gone, but his legacy remains strong in Uganda’s sports history, political scene, and hearts. Through the institutions he helped build and the lives he touched, his vision will continue to shape Uganda.
