Chelsea Joao Pedro Signing Finalized Ahead of Club World Cup

Joao Pedro Set to Strengthen Chelsea’s Club World Cup Squad

The highly anticipated Chelsea Joao Pedro signing has been officially confirmed. The Premier League club completed a deal worth up to £60 million for the Brighton striker. The 23-year-old Brazilian has committed to a seven-year contract and is en route to the United States for a medical before joining Enzo Maresca’s squad at the Club World Cup.

Pedro will arrive from Brazil and can be registered between June 27 and July 3 under FIFA’s tournament rules. His Chelsea debut could come as early as the quarter-final clash against Palmeiras, scheduled for Friday in Philadelphia, with kick-off at 2am UK time on Saturday.

Jamie Gittens Also Bound for Chelsea

In addition to the Chelsea Joao Pedro signing, the Blues are finalizing the acquisition of Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens. The 20-year-old is expected to join on a seven-year deal following a medical. Chelsea will pay around €65 million (£55.5 million) for the transfer.

Due to UEFA regulations, Gittens won’t be eligible for the Club World Cup. He already featured in the group stages for Dortmund, making him ineligible for Chelsea in the same competition.

Brighton Stays Committed to Transfer Policy

Joao Pedro’s departure aligns with Brighton’s long-term transfer strategy. Although the club had no immediate plans to sell, they accepted Chelsea’s offer amid rising interest from top-flight clubs. Newcastle also submitted a £50 million bid, which Pedro reportedly declined in favor of Chelsea.

Pedro signed for Brighton from Watford in 2023 for £35 million. Since then, he has contributed 40 goals and assists in 70 appearances. He also topped the scoring charts in the Europa League group stage and delivered a decisive goal against Marseille.

Chelsea views Pedro as a dynamic attacking option. He can operate centrally as a No. 9 or anywhere across the forward line. Watford will earn 20% of Brighton’s profit as part of a previously agreed sell-on clause.

Tensions Behind the Transfer

Pedro’s transfer follows a few controversial moments at Brighton. He was sent off against Brentford and later had a training ground altercation with teammate Jan Paul van Hecke. While not considered a disciplinary risk, those incidents reportedly raised concerns among Brighton’s coaching staff.

Brighton continues to develop talent and sell when the timing and valuation match. With Pedro now gone, the club will reassess its attacking setup, which includes Charalampos Kostoulas, Danny Welbeck, Georginio Rutter, and Evan Ferguson.

For Pedro, the Chelsea move is a major step toward playing at the top level of European football and boosting his chances of making Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad.
