At least 100 people suspected to have interacted with the confirmed Covid-19 case in Kalangala district are starving at the Isolation Centre.
Kalangala district registered its first COVID-19 case of a male adult working in the area on Friday last week.
Subsequently, Kalangala District Surveillance Taskforce begun to trace for all persons that had contact with the patient and admitted them into the Isolation Unit at Bishop Dunstan Secondary School in Kalangala town council.
However, the suspects are struggling to access basic necessities including food, water and descent accommodation since the taskforce isn’t providing them.
Richard Wasswa, one of those in the Isolation center, says they are living under deplorable conditions, which is exposing them to other health risks.
He also notes that the center is already congested but the taskforce continues bring in more suspects despite failing to provide meals for those already admitted.
Wasswa also says they have waited to be tested in vain yet many of the suspects voluntarily presented themselves in response to a call by the taskforce.
Ruth Nalubega, an expectant mother who is also quarantined, told Uganda Times that she hasn’t had any proper meal since Monday morning, adding that nobody is responding to their calls for help.
Farouk Mulema, another suspect in isolation, says besides lack of proper sleeping arrangements in the center, they were not provided with face mask, which exposes them to infection should one of them be infected.
Kajubi Twahika, a local journalist based in Kalangala district who has visited the Isolation Center confirmed to Uganda Times that all isn’t well at the facility.
He says that besides the small pre-arranged space that can’t cater for the high number of suspects, the district seems incapacitated to provide the underlying needs of the center.
Daniel Kikoola, the Kalangala Resident District Commissioner and chairperson of the Covid-19 Taskforce, says they have already notified Ministry of Health about their plight.
He says the Ministry has committed to send in reinforcement to effectively manage the situation.
FKikoola says the district is also working round the clock to mobilise resources to cater for the meals of the people in isolation.
