Uganda now has 85 confirmed cases of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) after two new positive cases were registered by the Ministry of health on Saturday.
The two cases are a 35-year old Kenyan male driver who entered the country through the Busia border. The second case is a Ugandan male from Masindi who was confirmed through the ongoing health ministry community survey.
According to the health ministry, the results of the Kenyan truck driver came back after the affected driver had traveled back to Kenya. Health officials as of now do not know how many people he came into contact with. This new case brings the number of positive tests among truck drivers to 27.
Today’s positive cases were tested at both the Uganda Virus Research Institute the and Makerere University Hospital. A total of 2,454 samples were tested at UVRI.
Of the 27, records show that 17 have returned to their respective countries, while 10 are admitted into hospitals within the country.
The health ministry is also investigating how the male from Masindi might have gotten infected with the disease to ascertain whether they were contacts of a known positive case or if they got the disease through community transmissions.
Ugandan Scientists and policy makers are in the process of trying to decide whether the country’s lockdown should be lifted or not.
The presence of community transmission might delay the lifting of a lockdown as health officials will need to ascertain the extent of infections and treat the sick before people are allowed to go back to work or even schools to re-open.
To date, Uganda has recorded 7 known community transmissions.
